The Deadly Anorexia Nervosa

The Deadly Anorexia Nervosa

As much as it is a self-imposed starvation, the effects of Anorexia nervosa can be deadly. Anorexia may appear not to be dangerous; however, the symptoms develop over a certain length of years. People with life experience predisposition, emotional issues as well as individuals with specific genetic situations are more susceptible to the medical condition. Anorexia nervosa often develop among females during their teenage years, though some eating disorder symptoms have been discovered in boys and girls in their pre-teens development years. The medical condition often occurs when an individual is overly concern about food intake to maintain the shape of their body and weight loss that leads to starvation.

Distinguishing the early signs of Anorexia nervosa with dieting and eating habit can be difficult because often, the symptoms can be attributed to other medical conditions making it more difficult to diagnose in the early stages. However, some physical examinations can review eating disorder symptoms some of them include; abnormal blood count, fatigue, amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), severe loss of weight, hair breakage, dehydration and loss of bone calcium resulting in broken bones. Other notable symptoms include abnormal heartbeats, heightened liver enzymes, constipation, inability to tolerate cold, low blood pressure, seizure as well as dizziness. Anorexia nervosa condition also has this signs, brittle nails, appearing thin and development of dry skin. It takes a professional to observe these signs and distinguish it from other medical conditions.

People with Anorexia nervosa will resist a change in eating habit, exercise excessively as well as restrict intake of food in a bid to continue weight and to prevent weight gain. Often, people with the condition engage in binge eating or purge soon after eating regular meals, and when the situation is not adequately treated, it might lead to being skeletal and they will also perceive themselves of being overweight. The causes of the condition are more alarming than an obsession with the shape of the body or having an unhealthy view of food. Though Anorexia is a self-imposed form of starvation, the process the medical condition takes is much more than just food. Someone suffering from the disease believes achieving a certain thinness or controlling the body and appetite is the means through which they can gain recognition and self-worth.

Though Anorexia is a psychological condition, if it is not curbed early, it behaves like a physical disease. Anorexia tends to worsen when the thoughts of foods are continually overshadowed by the feeling of being in shape. The effects are different depending on the severity. The worst impact of the condition is death, and other physical effects are often non-reversible, and these effects often lead to death among people with Anorexia. People with Anorexia usually have a disruption in career, and there is also the possibility of suicide. Other effects include loss of connection to religion or faith, a shutdown of vital body systems, and they might be forced to withdraw from school. It can lead to brain damage, infertility as well as heart attacks and isolation from family and friends.

Surprising Foods That May Raise Your Cholesterol Levels

Surprising Foods That May Raise Your Cholesterol Levels

As we age, the food we consume becomes more important to us than ever before. At a younger age, we certainly don’t think about the harm consuming particular food can cause, however, this start to fade away as we get older. The reason is that most conditions that humans suffer as they age are as a result of what they consume, which is why it is paramount to monitor the things we eat because some of these foods may aggravate certain health conditions that are present in the human as well as bring in new ones.

One of such conditions that require watching the things we consume is high cholesterol and heart disease. These conditions are a serious concern to a lot of people around the world and as such proper care should be taken to avoid the occurrence or to maintain the already existing condition. Many foods that we take tends to raise the blood cholesterol levels, and to be on a better side; such things should be avoided. It becomes even more troublesome when some of the foods we usually believe are good for our health is now culpable of raising our cholesterol levels.

We already know that consuming some specific food such as high-fat meat and butter raises cholesterol levels, but what we don’t know is that there are other foods that we think are okay for consumption that increases our cholesterol levels. Some of these foods will be discussed briefly below.

Whole-Fat Diary Foods

There is no doubt that dairy foods are rich in nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, proteins, and calcium; however, it becomes an issue if you go for a full-fat choice. You will be getting a dose of saturated fat when you opt for whole fat dairy food which is a red flag if you don’t want your cholesterol level to rise.

Liver

Liver can be a healthy food for a lot of individuals because it is a type of food that is high in iron. However, liver can be a source of increasing the cholesterol levels of others because it is the body’s principal source of cholesterol. Cholesterol is stored in the liver hence it is capable of increasing the cholesterol levels when consumed by some individuals.

Applesauce

It is said that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, not when the apple is conventionally grown. Apples that are grown conventionally contains high amount of pesticides that can cause metabolic syndromes as well as obesity. Also, most applesauce makers often rip off the fibre-rich back of apples and add sweeteners which makes it a processed food; such foods are incredibly high in sugar which reduces its fibre content making it a culprit to increase cholesterol levels.

Nuts

Nuts are often known to be a good food that can be taken instead of snacks; however, not all nuts are good. It is paramount to know that all nuts are created differently and there saturated fat levels are also different. It is essential to choose the nut you consume because you may be increasing your cholesterol level when you consume nuts such as Brazil nuts which are very high in saturated fats.

Dietary Fibre – For Diabetes, Heart and General Health

Dietary Fibre – For Diabetes, Heart and General Health

Dietary fibre is the part of a plant that the body cannot absorb or digest. They are also called roughage. They are not like other food components that the body can absorb, instead, when we take fibre, it passes through the stomach, small intestine, and colon straight out of the body. There are two types of fibre, soluble and insoluble fibre. The soluble fibre is the type of fibre that dissolves in water while the insoluble fibre does not dissolve in water. The soluble type of fibres dissolves in water to form a material like gel, and they help in lowering glucose level in the body as well as blood cholesterol level.

The foods that soluble fibre can be found include apples, carrots, oats, psyllium, beans, barley, peas, fruits, and citrus. The function of the insoluble type of fibre includes promoting the movement of materials via the digestive system and helps individual’s that are battling with constipation by increasing stool bulk. The sources of insoluble fibre include vegetables, beans, whole wheat flour, nuts and wheat bran. Though they are not digested by the body, consuming dietary fibre is beneficial to the human body in so many ways.

One of the ways that fibre benefits the body is by normalising the movement of the bowel by increasing the weight and size of the stool we pass out, hence also helping in maintaining a healthy bowel. Fibres contribute to decreasing the cholesterol level of the body. They contribute to decreasing the blood cholesterol level by lowering the low-density lipoprotein, and they also have so many other benefits related to the heart such as reducing inflammation as well as blood pressure.

In individuals with diabetes, soluble fibre has been found to slow the absorption of sugar and assist the blood sugar level, while the insoluble fibre reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Foods that are rich in fibre tend to occupy the stomach more than fewer fibre foods, which means it reduces the quantity of food that we consume, therefore, helps in maintaining a healthy weight. Meals with a high composition of fibre possess a lower amount of calories compared to its low composition meals, which also is a gain towards maintaining a healthy weight.

A fibre rich diet especially the insoluble type gotten from cereals can minimise the risk for type 2 diabetes. Diets rich in a high-fibre meal are linked to a reduced risk for other common digestive system cancers, including pharynx, mouth, and stomach. Fibre, particularly soluble fibre, is a significant part of any healthy heart diet. A high fibre consumption can reduce your risk for metabolic syndrome, a group of risk factors linked to coronary heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Eating a diet high in fibre improve cholesterol levels by reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol.

The Basics of Bell’s Palsy

The Basics of Bell’s Palsy

Bell’s palsy is a health condition that affects the muscles on one side of the face. It causes the weakening or paralysing of the muscles on the part of the face it affects, making the part of the face to become stiff or droop. This condition is usually caused by trauma to the facial nerve also known as or called seventh cranial nerve. Bell’s Palsy can affect anyone; however, individuals recovering from viral infections and those that have diabetes are more susceptible to the health condition. The symptoms of Bell’s Palsy appears like that of stroke; however, this medical condition is not something that should be a problem to anyone, because most of the time the symptoms are often temporary with very few percentage having a permanent trait.

The symptoms of Bell’s Palsy should not be mistaken for a stroke, though it may appear alike, however, in the case of stroke, which causes weakness of muscles on the face may also cause muscle weakness in other parts of the body. The primary cause of the condition has been believed by doctors to be due to damage to the facial nerve that causes swelling. The facial nerve moves round the skull through a tiny bony area, when the nerve gets swollen, it affects the skull because it pushes hard against it and causes the nerve to malfunction and leads to the restructuring of the face. Another notable culprit is viral infections, which have been tipped to be one of the leading causes of Bell’s Palsy. The herpes simplex 1 virus, a virus that causes cold sores has been noted to be responsible for the infection.

Bell’s Palsy is a medical condition that its symptoms come out suddenly. It can happen overnight, you may be all right the night before going to bed, but will wake up with the symptoms of the disorder. However, before the actual sign may surface, some individuals may experience pain in the back of their ear two days before, while some people may hear sound louder than normal some days before they experience the main symptom of the infection. The usual symptoms include drooling, twitch of the facial muscles, inability to blink or close the eyelid, pain or numbness behind the ear. Others include decreased sense of taste, lesser or more eye water, difficulty chewing.

The typical recovery period of Bell’s Palsy in some individuals is just a couple of weeks, the symptoms, drooling and weakness of the facial muscles get to their peak within two days. Some people who develop the condition may take up to three months to completely recover from the condition while some other will require a longer time before they recover fully from the infection, while in few scenarios the deformation may remain permanent. Diagnosing Bell’s Palsy is not easy as there is no proven method of testing for it, in most cases, your doctor will only determine if you have the infection after ruling out other conditions.

Since there are no definite ways of testing for the Bell’s Palsy, there aren’t any medications to stop it yet. However, if a condition is caused by the herpes virus of by shingles, antiviral drugs may be administered, though there is no research backup to the potency of the medication.

Reasons Why You Should Avoid These Supplements

Reasons Why You Should Avoid These Supplements

Consuming supplements is an everyday routine to some individuals, to them, it is more like brushing their teeth and taking their bath. These people are so used to taking these supplements that they jump into consuming just any available one even when they know little next to nothing about it. They hardly do without these pills. On their own, supplements are good; however, not all types are good for human consumption, especially when you know nothing about it. It is paramount to talk to a doctor before taking any supplement; this is because some of these pills might not be good for your present medical condition.

The downside about taking un-prescribed pills is that they may cause severe health problem and aggravate an already existing health condition that you may be experiencing. We understand that consuming supplements without consulting a doctor is dangerous to your health; however, there are certain pills that you should go close to even when you do self-medication when it comes to consuming supplements. No matter what you do, you should never get close to taking these supplements because their side effect is very severe that it may cause permanent damage to your system. Below are some of the supplements that you should avoid by all means possible.

Aconite

Aconite is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that is consumed to alleviate heart-related problems, gout, inflammation, joint pain as well as nerve problems. Aconite on its own contains strong venom like that from poisonous snakes and extremely toxic poisons that are found in lead. All these make consuming the pill to ease symptoms very dangerous to health.

Germanium

Some proponents promote the ability of germanium to enhance the immune system in such a manner that aid in treating HIV, Cancer as well as other conditions, however, this has no sufficient backing to the claim. That stated, the potential negativity associated with the pill is enough reason why people should avoid consuming the supplement. Germanium has been liked to cause kidney damage that may lead to death.

Kava-or kava kava

Kava Kava is another pill that you should keep away from due to the danger it poses to your liver. It has been believed for hundreds of years back that Kava Kava provides health benefits which include the treatment of anxiety and insomnia, it is also said to aid relaxation as well. The big issue about this supplement is that its potency has not been backed or confirmed to be what they truly said about it. The root has been linked to causing liver-related issues which include liver damage, failure as well as cirrhosis.

There are a lot of other pills that you should avoid they include Ephedra, Yohimbe, LX1, Comfrey, Coltsfoot, Chaparral. These supplements have been associated with some life-threatening conditions including paralysis, liver damage, breathing difficulties, death, some of these issues starts as early as from three weeks from the start of use. To avoid these severe health-threatening problems, you should stay away from these supplements or simply consult with a specialist in nutrition that will guide you to use supplements provided by reliable manufacturer companies.

It’s never too late, before addressing any issue related to your smile, gums, teeth, and other oral or in general health issues, consult with Dr. Jean-Jacques Edderai. Cardiotrophin: The Protein that makes the Heart think you are Exercising when you are not

Cardiotrophin: The Protein that makes the Heart think you are Exercising when you are not

Exercise plays a significant role in keeping the human heart healthy. A healthy heart pumps blood to other parts of the body proficiently, it performs at its best effectiveness and reduces the chances of any risk of heart failure. Keeping the heart healthy is paramount to anyone that wishes to lead a healthy life, which is why a lot of individuals have taken to exercising. Exercising the body does more than keeping the body physique in shape, its role in strengthening the heart cannot be overemphasised. However, understanding how exercising aid the heart can bring about a significant breakthrough in treating certain cardio conditions.

Various researches have been done to ascertain how exercise benefits the heart, and a lot of findings have been done, and there have been some alterations that show that some specific proteins can mimic the way exercise affects the heart, making the organ think that you are exercising when you are not actually doing so. It will be great to achieve the same positive effect that exercising has on the heart with the real activities involved. Cardiotrophin is a protein that does precisely that; it makes the heart feel as if you are exercising while you are not, therefore giving your heart the benefit of exercise without you undergoing the real exercising activities.

This claim was backed by a recent study conducted by a group of senior scientist at the Ottawa Hospital. According to the study, the protein, Cardiotrophin, will on its own instigate the profitable growth of the heart by making the organ feel as if you are exercising. The protein on its own will stimulates the muscles and cells of the heart in a way that exercise does and gives the gains that are usually attributed to working out or exercise as the case may be. This is a real scientific breakthrough because it will significantly benefit individuals treating right heart failure, as it has not much drug interventions as the left heart failure.

The researchers went on to state that Cardiotrophin enhances the growth of heart muscles and blood vessel in the heart. When this is done, the ability of the heart to pump blood increases, the scenario is the same as what is obtained when we exercise. The study also showed that the protein is useful in damaged hearts, no matter the part of the heart that is damaged. Most of the conventional heart failure drugs are for the left heart failure, with little or none of them being active in the right heart; hence, Cardiotrophin can do more in alleviating such condition. In the past, right heart failure has always been treated by transplant, but with such a scientific breakthrough as this, there is undoubtedly light at the end of the tunnel.

Consuming Red Meat is it Good or Bad for Your Health?

Consuming Red Meat is it Good or Bad for Your Health?

In the history of nutrition, red meat remains one of the most controversial foods.

Despite the fact that humans have been consuming red meat throughout evolution, some reasonable portion of individuals still believes that it can cause harm. The red meat our ancestors ate back in the day, is so different from the meat we consume today. In time past, animals ate so much of natural foods, they roamed free and ate grass, insects and everything green. They were free to feed on their own, and they ate green grass and various other edible plants.

The meat gotten from these animals of days before now are entirely different from the meat derived from most animals of now. The red meat from a naturally feed cow cannot be compared with the meat gotten from a cow that was born and raised in a factory and consumed grain-based feed. This processed animals have received different chemical alterations and most importantly, growth-enhancing antibiotics and hormones.

One notably disease that has been associated with consumption of red meat is heart disease. The reason is that some red meat contains high amount of saturated fat which happens to be a primary culprit to increase of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL)levels as mentioned in our last week blog. It has also been said that consuming red meat increases the risk of cancer especially colorectal cancer. Red meat contains heme iron (The iron-containing molecule in hemoglobin that serves as the site for oxygen binding), and this compound can damage cells, which leads to cancer. The saturated fat that this meat contains has also been linked to causing cancers of the breast and colon. And when red meat is cooked, carcinogens are formed; also, all these have been attributed to cause or aggravate cancer in humans.

It’s not all bad about consuming red meat; it does have health benefits. Red meat gives protein that helps in building muscles and bones. Not only that, the heme iron that red meat contains is easily absorbed by the human body, and this iron is needed by women during childbirth. Red meat is also rich in Vitamin B12, which is responsible for producing DNA and keeps the red blood cells and nerves healthy. It is also very rich in zinc that helps the immune system to perform well. Red meat may contain some amount of calories, however, consuming it gives you more than ten other nutrients other than the calories.

Red meat contains numerous vitamins and minerals that are essential for our health and can work as a well-balanced diet. That red meat has been associated with some health threatening diseases does not mean you should give up on eating it. You just need to make a better selection and portion decisions. Avoiding any form of processed meat such as bacon, deli meats, sausages, ham, and hot dogs is a great way of choosing the right red meat to consume.

Properly cooked and unprocessed red meat is very healthy, as long as you’re choosing grass-fed red meat employing healthy cooking methods avoiding charred pieces, there is nothing really to worry about consuming red meat.

WHAT CAUSES STAINED TEETH?

WHAT CAUSES STAINED TEETH?

Stained teeth are a major problem faced by almost every other person these days. A recent study suggests that majority of the people want to brighten their teeth up to enhance their smiles. Stained teeth give a really bad impression about a person and shatter his self-confidence greatly. There are many causes for stained teeth and each on has a unique reason therefore, the treatments for every cause are also different. Following are the ways for you to identify the cause of stained teeth.

BY TOBACCO USAGE

Eating tobacco or smoking causes teeth discolouration.

DISCOLORATION CAUSED BY FOOD

Fruits like potatoes and apples, and drinks such as coke, wine, tea and coffee may discolour your teeth.

UNHEALTHY DENTAL HYGIENE

Using antiseptic mouth rinses for getting rid of stain causing items like tobacco and coffee and plaque, flossing and insufficient brushing may cause stained teeth.

MEDICINES

Medications like the antibiotics Doxycycline and Tetracycline cause stained teeth if they are given to kids below the age of 8. Antipsychotic medications and medications for high BP also cause stained teeth.

BY AN ILLNESS

There are many illnesses that can affect the dentin and enamel and cause stained teeth. The treatments for many diseases are also responsible for teeth discoloration. Treatments like chemotherapy and radiations can lead to stained teeth. Additionally, some contagions in pregnant women also cause stained teeth in the babies by disturbing the formation of the enamel.

MOUTH WASHES

Mouthwashes loaded with chemicals such as cetylpyridinium chloride and chlorhexidine may also lead to teeth discoloration

INHERITANCE

Few people have thicker and shinier enamel than the rest by birth.

OLD AGE

With the passage of time, the exterior coating of the enamel on your tooth shreds off and shows the natural yellowish shade of the dentin.

INJURY

Your teeth may also be discoloured if you have fallen at a very young age (below 8) that has disturbed the development of the enamel. An injury can also cause stained teeth in adults.

EXTREME USE OF FLOURIDE

Extreme fluoride usage from toothpaste, mouthwashes and oral supplements or from the surroundings (by using salty water frequently) can lead to stained teeth.

Paying regular visits to a dentist for proper oral hygiene and advice is highly necessary to avoid stained teeth. Visit your dentist as soon as possible if you have stained teeth for any of the above mentioned reason to get treated.

WHY GO FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS?

WHY GO FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS?

A dental implant is a tooth root made up of titanium post that is attached to the jawbone underneath the gum line by a surgical process that lets your dentist to post a bridge or alternative teeth in that region. A dental implant is not as loose as a denture and do not come off. They are of great advantage to oral hygiene since they are not attached to other teeth in the mouth like bridges. Following are the reasons why you must go for dental implants.

DENTAL IMPLANTS ARE LONG LASTING

The typical dental bridges just last for about a time span of 10 years if you look after them appropriately. However, they definitely have to be changed at some point. Whilst the dental implants might require regular alterations, nonetheless they can last for your entire life if you take care of them properly.

THEY LOOK LIKE THE NATURAL TEETH

The dental implants are firm, strong and reinstatea missing tooth that feels, fits, looks and works like a natural one. Other replacement options can weaken up the bones and may cause a problem while talking, smiling, eating and performing other chores of daily life.

LET YOU EAT WITHOUT TROUBLE

You can easily bite, chew and eat whatever you like without having the same uncomfortable feeling that is given by the dentures as the dental implants are just like natural teeth.

LET YOU SPEAK EASILY

Alterations to detachable dentures can cause a problem while pronouncing words. This doesn’t happen with dental implants.

SAFEGUARD THE REST OF YOUR TEETH

Before fixing a denture into your mouth, you need to grind away both the teeth on either sides of the lost tooth. Therefore, this results in causing harm to the fit teeth just for the sake of the missing ones. Bridges also stop the opposite teeth from moving as they naturally would if a gap was left for a long time.

KEEP THE TEETH FIRM

Tooth supported bridges often slide when you are smiling, eating, talking, kissing, coughing or yawning and you always have to get them back to their original position in the mouth. The dental plants stay attached to one place and blend with the jawbone naturally without moving, shifting or clicking.

Have you gone for dental implants yet if you have lost some teeth? Go get it done as soon as possible as it is without doubt the best teeth replacement therapy.

Avoid the ER for Dental Emergencies

Avoid the ER for Dental Emergencies

Every year, millions of people go to the hospital for dental problems. Whether it’s an abscess, a lost or broken tooth, or swelling, people rush to the ER to get treatment. Decades ago, when dentists were 8-5 Monday through Friday, this could be understood. But, when most dentists offer off-hours treatment this is no longer the best option when you’re in pain. In the North Miami Beach area, you can call Dr. Jean-Jacque Edderai 24 hours a day at 305-947-7999.

According to a study published in the Journal of Public Health Dentistry, in the state of Florida, trips to the ER for dental problems is costing millions in taxpayer money every year. Within the past decade, trips to the ER for dental problems rose by 57 percent. Half of the $193.4 million came from Medicare and Medicaid. This is a pointless expense since modern emergency rooms are not equipped to do anything for you. All they can do is give you a painkiller and/or antibiotic and tell you to go to a dentist.

The question then becomes, if dentists are more available then ever for emergencies, why are people still flocking to hospitals? Part of it may have to do with the Medicare/caid program in itself. In some states, like Florida, Medicaid only has to cover emergencies related to dentures, draining abscesses, and extracting teeth. Adding an option to pay online has helped some people, but it is not the only measure that we should be taking.

Since less than 10% of Florida dentists take Medicaid, many people aren’t getting desperately needed root canals and fillings. So the damage, then the pain, get worse. Until patients are out of options. The flux of people to the ER can’t be placed directly on Medicaid though. Nearly 40% of those who went to the ER for dental problems paid cash.

If there was a greater focus on prevention, then a lot of these visits could be avoided. If the $1500 per ER visit was put towards early treatment and education, we would see fewer problems, period. Another step we should be taking, as a country, is to cover routine visits and fillings. It is a twisted notion that people should have to be in excruciating pain before they can get the help they need. We don’t just see this in dental insurance, health insurance almost never covers preventative measures (one exception being birth control).

As a dentist, it is difficult to see a person with tooth pain, which is arguably the worst type of pain. By the time a person is in pain, a special procedure is a given. You are not going to go in with tooth pain, get a shot in the arm and be on your way. By the time there is pain, drilling, and filling, and applying crowns are all likely outcomes. If we instead took the time and put the money into educating people, we could save time, money, comfort, and even lives.

Before treating gum, tooth, or other oral problems consult with Dr. JJ Edderai. A dental check-up every three to four months will allow Dr. Edderai to keep a watchful eye on your oral health and prevent cavities before they start.
