Developing a strong Immune System

Developing a strong Immune System

The human immune system also known as the defence mechanism of the body helping to fight against infections and harmful pathogens which include parasitic worms, fungi, viruses and bacteria among so many others. The immune system is more like a private force that notices deadly attacks against the body and help in destroying them throughout the lifespan of an individual. Most individuals are lucky to be born with a robust immune system, while others have to develop it.

The immune system is the combination of different means that the body sees foreign organisms, tissues, and cells and identify the harmful ones and fights them helping the body to remain healthy. All living beings are created by either an innate or acquired immune system. People with an innate immune system is known to possess strong immunity while individuals that have to develop their immune system is known as acquired immunity. For people who may want to build their immune system, specific practices should be followed to achieve their goal. Below are some of the methods.

Eating a balanced diet

A balanced diet consists of all the necessary nutrients in the right proportion. We are what we eat. How healthy an individual is, is as a result of what he is consuming. The health of the immune system is directly proportional to what you eat. If you want to develop a robust immune system, make sure to make some foods part of your daily diet, they can work wonders for your body defence mechanism. Fruits such as lemon, grapefruit, tangerine, and orange are good boosters of the immune system, while berries (raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries) are also useful for immunity, kiwi and papaya also are potent in developing the immune system. Other foods to be considered are ginger, turmeric, sweet potatoes, carrots, garlic, broccoli, flaxseed, and yogurts.

Quit smoking and minimise alcohol

Tobacco smoking is a habit that harms the body as well as the immune system; it can even weaken an already healthy immune system. If you want to develop a robust immune system, try to stop smoking tobacco and reduce the amount of alcohol you consume. You should learn how to drink socially, take alcohol only when it is necessary. The pathogens present in alcohol and tobacco are dangerous to the immune system. If you want an immune system that is capable of fighting off foreign infections, you have to make these lifestyle changes no matter how difficult it may seem.

Sleeping well

Getting sound and good rest works wonder on your immune system. Good sleep after the stress of the day relieves the body of the harmful effects and promote good health. Loss of sleep which occurs as a result of stress and fatigue can be dangerous to health; these conditions cause an imbalance in hormones which can affect the functioning of the immune system hence exposing the body to potentially harmful diseases. On no circumstance should you compromise your sleep, develop a worry-free habit and ensure you have the daily 8 hours of sleep, Difficult when you are an adult, at least try 7 or even one extra hour of your actual sleeping time. You can help yourself by going to bed trying to read a book (never TV) early at night to rise early in the morning.

Warning signs of CVA

Warning signs of CVA

CVA (Cerebrovascular accident) known as stroke is a medical condition that affects people as they grow older. It is a situation that occurs when there is no flow of blood to the brain. This causes the death of brain cells within short minutes of its occurrence. Cerebrovascular accident is of two types, ischemic and haemorrhagic. The most common type is the ischemic stroke which accounts for almost 85 percent of cases, and this kind is caused by a blockage of the blood vessel in the brain by a blood clot. The second type of CVA is caused by bleeding as a result of the breakage of a blood vessel.

Stroke is a life-threatening condition that needs urgent attention when you start noticing any of the symptoms; this now takes us to the signs of cerebrovascular accident (CVA). Due to the stoppage of blood flow to the brain which leads to the death of brain cells, this situation causes a sudden weakness on some parts of the body which include the face, leg or arm, all of which occurs in one part of the body. Other symptoms include difficulty in balancing which result in inability to walk freely, dizziness and loss of coordination. People who have stroke attack will experience difficulty understanding speech and speaking, unknown cause of a severe headache.

Identifying the symptoms of cerebrovascular accident can go a long way toward saving a life. Often, people may experience just one of the signs of stroke; it is essential to act as fast as possible because it will improve the chances of complete healing. It is advised not to wait until you see the full signs and symptoms or stroke before taking necessary actions because it might be too late by then because certain drugs need to be given to individuals that have the condition within the first three hours of its occurrence. If stroke patients are given the medication in the first three hours, it will help in preventing further damages like permanent disability and death.

Individuals who have suffered and recovered from a cerebrovascular accident may also suffer from fatigue, spasticity, changes in behaviour and changes in senses. They will also experience paralysis, weakness, problem with vision, having issue with attention, memory as well as perceptions. It is essential to follow up the recovery program of the condition because the chances of having another stroke increases when you’ve suffered one before. Some recovering option includes yoga and acupuncture especially if the aftermath condition relates to depression and weakness of the muscle.

You can minimise the risk of having CVA by watching what you consume. Sodium increases the risk factor for stroke, so it will be great if you limit the intake of sodium, refined grains, sugar as well as fats. Eat more of nuts, vegetables, and beans. Exercising more will reduce the chance of having stroke. Red meat has always been a dangerous type of meat to eat, so rather than red meat, consume seafood and stop or limit the use of tobacco. High blood pressure triggers the emergence of stroke, taking medications as directed by a doctor for such a condition will minimise it, and also limit the intake of alcohol.

What you need to know about the Endocrine System

What you need to know about the Endocrine System

The human endocrine system is a combination of organs that produce hormones in the human body. Hormones are means of transport that travels around the body and communicate with cells on what to do. The endocrine system comprises of five glands which are adrenals, parathyroid, pituitary, pancreas, and thyroid. The endocrine system is not the only organ in the human body that secrete hormone. There are other organs in the body that produces hormone an example of such organ is the gut.

The pituitary is a pea-sized gland which is the primary controlling hub of the body and is located at the root of the brain, and this organ is responsible for the secretion of the significant portion of hormones in the human system. The pituitary gland does not function in isolation, it is controlled or regulated by the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus produces its hormones, and these hormones communicate with the pituitary gland on the duties to perform. In the endocrine system, the pituitary gland is the controlling head of the whole system. The organ is made up of two lopes which are adenohypophysis and neurohypophysis. The adenohypophysis is known as the anterior lope, while the neurohypophysis is called the posterior lobe.

The pituitary gland is in charge of the secretion of the following hormones which include prolactin; this is a hormone that stimulates the mammary gland which produces milk in females. The pituitary gland secretes the hormone that regulates the menstrual cycle, stimulating follicle hormone. Other hormones that are secreted by this gland are thyroid stimulating hormone, growth hormone, and vasopressin. Adrenocorticotropic hormone, oxytocin, and luteinizing hormone are different types of hormone secreted by the gland. These hormones secreted by the pituitary gland which is the central hub of the endocrine system regulates and help in controlling some vital functions of the human system. The anterior lobe of the gland mainly secretes the hormones from the pituitary gland.

The next gland that makes up the endocrine system is the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland helps in the production of energy as well as controls body’s temperature. Contrary to the pituitary gland that secretes many hormones, the thyroid gland secretes just three hormones which are known as Calcitonin, T3, and T4 hormones. The T3 hormones are known as Triiodothyronine while T4 hormone is called Thyroxin. The gland is situated at the anterior section of the neck below the larynx and in front of the trachea. Besides regulating the body’s temperature and production of energy in the human system, the thyroid gland also helps the body to control the levels of blood calcium.

The hypothalamus gland is located close to the pituitary gland and is a part of the brain. Its function in the body is assisting the pituitary gland in controlling other vital organs. It does its duty by the secretion of a hormone that relates to the pituitary gland. Some of the hormones secreted by the hypothalamus include dopamine, thyrotropin-secreting hormones, and somatostatin among others.

The hormones secreted by the pancreas are of two parts, the exocrine and the endocrine parts. The exocrine portion secretes hormones that are responsible for the breakdown of food while the endocrine part secrets the insulin hormone which is responsible for taking sugar to the cells of the body.

How to Deal with Food Poisoning

How to Deal with Food Poisoning

Understanding the type of food poisoning is paramount to the treatment that you need. A lot of people don’t know that food poisoning is of different types, and the often treat all the same way they see. However, diagnosing food poisoning is based on certain things which include the duration of sickness, the symptoms involved, health history and the food that was consumed.

Medical professional does carry out a physical examination, diagnostic test as well as checking for dehydration signs depending on your health history and the symptoms. Doctors will also examine for parasites, stool examination (known as stool culture) and blood test to confirm the diagnosis.

Staying hydrated when you are experiencing food poisoning is essential, this will help you contain the spread of bacteria to people sharing living or working space with you. Food poisoning doesn’t often come with severe symptoms, and however, if you have severe signs that stay for extended period of days such as more than two or three days, you may be experiencing something more than a food poisoning.

Food poisoning often arises as a result of food that wasn’t handled or stored well or bacterial infection. If it came through the consumption of poorly stored or processed food, it often gets through your system in less time which means it sets in quicker. Toxins caused by bacteria cause this type of food poisoning and they are often less severe though the pain is not different from the other kind.

Bacterial infection causes the second type of food poisoning. This kind of food poisoning occurs when a bacteria known as salmonella finds its way into the digestive system where they are capable of causing severe damage to the cells of your intestine. This type of food poisoning is often life-threatening when left untreated. The symptoms are usually the same as the first type of food poisoning.

Treating food poisoning largely depend on the source of the infection and the level of the symptoms. Often, food poisoning subsides within few days without treatment, while bacteria-caused poisoning usually lasts longer. One of the symptoms of food poisoning is vomiting and diarrhoea which makes the body to lose fluids, so the essential treatment of food poisoning should be replacing the lost fluids in the body. Consume minerals which are rich in calcium, sodium, and potassium to maintain the fluid balance in the body that is lost. For those that have persistent vomiting and diarrhoea, they can prevent dehydration by visiting a doctor to receive fluids and salt intravenously.

Both types of food poisoning are not something that you want to get; the best way is to avoid it before it happens. Take steps to prevent it from affecting your family, ensure your food is cooked, stored and handled correctly. One of the food through which most of these bacteria enters the human system is meat, make sure that you prepare meat for long enough time and make sure you avoid any form of cross-contamination. Live safe and live well.
