Surprising Foods That May Raise Your Cholesterol Levels

Surprising Foods That May Raise Your Cholesterol Levels

As we age, the food we consume becomes more important to us than ever before. At a younger age, we certainly don’t think about the harm consuming particular food can cause, however, this start to fade away as we get older. The reason is that most conditions that humans suffer as they age are as a result of what they consume, which is why it is paramount to monitor the things we eat because some of these foods may aggravate certain health conditions that are present in the human as well as bring in new ones.

One of such conditions that require watching the things we consume is high cholesterol and heart disease. These conditions are a serious concern to a lot of people around the world and as such proper care should be taken to avoid the occurrence or to maintain the already existing condition. Many foods that we take tends to raise the blood cholesterol levels, and to be on a better side; such things should be avoided. It becomes even more troublesome when some of the foods we usually believe are good for our health is now culpable of raising our cholesterol levels.

We already know that consuming some specific food such as high-fat meat and butter raises cholesterol levels, but what we don’t know is that there are other foods that we think are okay for consumption that increases our cholesterol levels. Some of these foods will be discussed briefly below.

Whole-Fat Diary Foods

There is no doubt that dairy foods are rich in nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, proteins, and calcium; however, it becomes an issue if you go for a full-fat choice. You will be getting a dose of saturated fat when you opt for whole fat dairy food which is a red flag if you don’t want your cholesterol level to rise.

Liver

Liver can be a healthy food for a lot of individuals because it is a type of food that is high in iron. However, liver can be a source of increasing the cholesterol levels of others because it is the body’s principal source of cholesterol. Cholesterol is stored in the liver hence it is capable of increasing the cholesterol levels when consumed by some individuals.

Applesauce

It is said that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, not when the apple is conventionally grown. Apples that are grown conventionally contains high amount of pesticides that can cause metabolic syndromes as well as obesity. Also, most applesauce makers often rip off the fibre-rich back of apples and add sweeteners which makes it a processed food; such foods are incredibly high in sugar which reduces its fibre content making it a culprit to increase cholesterol levels.

Nuts

Nuts are often known to be a good food that can be taken instead of snacks; however, not all nuts are good. It is paramount to know that all nuts are created differently and there saturated fat levels are also different. It is essential to choose the nut you consume because you may be increasing your cholesterol level when you consume nuts such as Brazil nuts which are very high in saturated fats.

Dietary Fibre – For Diabetes, Heart and General Health

Dietary Fibre – For Diabetes, Heart and General Health

Dietary fibre is the part of a plant that the body cannot absorb or digest. They are also called roughage. They are not like other food components that the body can absorb, instead, when we take fibre, it passes through the stomach, small intestine, and colon straight out of the body. There are two types of fibre, soluble and insoluble fibre. The soluble fibre is the type of fibre that dissolves in water while the insoluble fibre does not dissolve in water. The soluble type of fibres dissolves in water to form a material like gel, and they help in lowering glucose level in the body as well as blood cholesterol level.

The foods that soluble fibre can be found include apples, carrots, oats, psyllium, beans, barley, peas, fruits, and citrus. The function of the insoluble type of fibre includes promoting the movement of materials via the digestive system and helps individual’s that are battling with constipation by increasing stool bulk. The sources of insoluble fibre include vegetables, beans, whole wheat flour, nuts and wheat bran. Though they are not digested by the body, consuming dietary fibre is beneficial to the human body in so many ways.

One of the ways that fibre benefits the body is by normalising the movement of the bowel by increasing the weight and size of the stool we pass out, hence also helping in maintaining a healthy bowel. Fibres contribute to decreasing the cholesterol level of the body. They contribute to decreasing the blood cholesterol level by lowering the low-density lipoprotein, and they also have so many other benefits related to the heart such as reducing inflammation as well as blood pressure.

In individuals with diabetes, soluble fibre has been found to slow the absorption of sugar and assist the blood sugar level, while the insoluble fibre reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Foods that are rich in fibre tend to occupy the stomach more than fewer fibre foods, which means it reduces the quantity of food that we consume, therefore, helps in maintaining a healthy weight. Meals with a high composition of fibre possess a lower amount of calories compared to its low composition meals, which also is a gain towards maintaining a healthy weight.

A fibre rich diet especially the insoluble type gotten from cereals can minimise the risk for type 2 diabetes. Diets rich in a high-fibre meal are linked to a reduced risk for other common digestive system cancers, including pharynx, mouth, and stomach. Fibre, particularly soluble fibre, is a significant part of any healthy heart diet. A high fibre consumption can reduce your risk for metabolic syndrome, a group of risk factors linked to coronary heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Eating a diet high in fibre improve cholesterol levels by reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol.

The Basics of Bell’s Palsy

The Basics of Bell’s Palsy

Bell’s palsy is a health condition that affects the muscles on one side of the face. It causes the weakening or paralysing of the muscles on the part of the face it affects, making the part of the face to become stiff or droop. This condition is usually caused by trauma to the facial nerve also known as or called seventh cranial nerve. Bell’s Palsy can affect anyone; however, individuals recovering from viral infections and those that have diabetes are more susceptible to the health condition. The symptoms of Bell’s Palsy appears like that of stroke; however, this medical condition is not something that should be a problem to anyone, because most of the time the symptoms are often temporary with very few percentage having a permanent trait.

The symptoms of Bell’s Palsy should not be mistaken for a stroke, though it may appear alike, however, in the case of stroke, which causes weakness of muscles on the face may also cause muscle weakness in other parts of the body. The primary cause of the condition has been believed by doctors to be due to damage to the facial nerve that causes swelling. The facial nerve moves round the skull through a tiny bony area, when the nerve gets swollen, it affects the skull because it pushes hard against it and causes the nerve to malfunction and leads to the restructuring of the face. Another notable culprit is viral infections, which have been tipped to be one of the leading causes of Bell’s Palsy. The herpes simplex 1 virus, a virus that causes cold sores has been noted to be responsible for the infection.

Bell’s Palsy is a medical condition that its symptoms come out suddenly. It can happen overnight, you may be all right the night before going to bed, but will wake up with the symptoms of the disorder. However, before the actual sign may surface, some individuals may experience pain in the back of their ear two days before, while some people may hear sound louder than normal some days before they experience the main symptom of the infection. The usual symptoms include drooling, twitch of the facial muscles, inability to blink or close the eyelid, pain or numbness behind the ear. Others include decreased sense of taste, lesser or more eye water, difficulty chewing.

The typical recovery period of Bell’s Palsy in some individuals is just a couple of weeks, the symptoms, drooling and weakness of the facial muscles get to their peak within two days. Some people who develop the condition may take up to three months to completely recover from the condition while some other will require a longer time before they recover fully from the infection, while in few scenarios the deformation may remain permanent. Diagnosing Bell’s Palsy is not easy as there is no proven method of testing for it, in most cases, your doctor will only determine if you have the infection after ruling out other conditions.

Since there are no definite ways of testing for the Bell’s Palsy, there aren’t any medications to stop it yet. However, if a condition is caused by the herpes virus of by shingles, antiviral drugs may be administered, though there is no research backup to the potency of the medication.

Cardiotrophin: The Protein that makes the Heart think you are Exercising when you are not

Cardiotrophin: The Protein that makes the Heart think you are Exercising when you are not

Exercise plays a significant role in keeping the human heart healthy. A healthy heart pumps blood to other parts of the body proficiently, it performs at its best effectiveness and reduces the chances of any risk of heart failure. Keeping the heart healthy is paramount to anyone that wishes to lead a healthy life, which is why a lot of individuals have taken to exercising. Exercising the body does more than keeping the body physique in shape, its role in strengthening the heart cannot be overemphasised. However, understanding how exercising aid the heart can bring about a significant breakthrough in treating certain cardio conditions.

Various researches have been done to ascertain how exercise benefits the heart, and a lot of findings have been done, and there have been some alterations that show that some specific proteins can mimic the way exercise affects the heart, making the organ think that you are exercising when you are not actually doing so. It will be great to achieve the same positive effect that exercising has on the heart with the real activities involved. Cardiotrophin is a protein that does precisely that; it makes the heart feel as if you are exercising while you are not, therefore giving your heart the benefit of exercise without you undergoing the real exercising activities.

This claim was backed by a recent study conducted by a group of senior scientist at the Ottawa Hospital. According to the study, the protein, Cardiotrophin, will on its own instigate the profitable growth of the heart by making the organ feel as if you are exercising. The protein on its own will stimulates the muscles and cells of the heart in a way that exercise does and gives the gains that are usually attributed to working out or exercise as the case may be. This is a real scientific breakthrough because it will significantly benefit individuals treating right heart failure, as it has not much drug interventions as the left heart failure.

The researchers went on to state that Cardiotrophin enhances the growth of heart muscles and blood vessel in the heart. When this is done, the ability of the heart to pump blood increases, the scenario is the same as what is obtained when we exercise. The study also showed that the protein is useful in damaged hearts, no matter the part of the heart that is damaged. Most of the conventional heart failure drugs are for the left heart failure, with little or none of them being active in the right heart; hence, Cardiotrophin can do more in alleviating such condition. In the past, right heart failure has always been treated by transplant, but with such a scientific breakthrough as this, there is undoubtedly light at the end of the tunnel.

Consuming Red Meat is it Good or Bad for Your Health?

Consuming Red Meat is it Good or Bad for Your Health?

In the history of nutrition, red meat remains one of the most controversial foods.

Despite the fact that humans have been consuming red meat throughout evolution, some reasonable portion of individuals still believes that it can cause harm. The red meat our ancestors ate back in the day, is so different from the meat we consume today. In time past, animals ate so much of natural foods, they roamed free and ate grass, insects and everything green. They were free to feed on their own, and they ate green grass and various other edible plants.

The meat gotten from these animals of days before now are entirely different from the meat derived from most animals of now. The red meat from a naturally feed cow cannot be compared with the meat gotten from a cow that was born and raised in a factory and consumed grain-based feed. This processed animals have received different chemical alterations and most importantly, growth-enhancing antibiotics and hormones.

One notably disease that has been associated with consumption of red meat is heart disease. The reason is that some red meat contains high amount of saturated fat which happens to be a primary culprit to increase of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL)levels as mentioned in our last week blog. It has also been said that consuming red meat increases the risk of cancer especially colorectal cancer. Red meat contains heme iron (The iron-containing molecule in hemoglobin that serves as the site for oxygen binding), and this compound can damage cells, which leads to cancer. The saturated fat that this meat contains has also been linked to causing cancers of the breast and colon. And when red meat is cooked, carcinogens are formed; also, all these have been attributed to cause or aggravate cancer in humans.

It’s not all bad about consuming red meat; it does have health benefits. Red meat gives protein that helps in building muscles and bones. Not only that, the heme iron that red meat contains is easily absorbed by the human body, and this iron is needed by women during childbirth. Red meat is also rich in Vitamin B12, which is responsible for producing DNA and keeps the red blood cells and nerves healthy. It is also very rich in zinc that helps the immune system to perform well. Red meat may contain some amount of calories, however, consuming it gives you more than ten other nutrients other than the calories.

Red meat contains numerous vitamins and minerals that are essential for our health and can work as a well-balanced diet. That red meat has been associated with some health threatening diseases does not mean you should give up on eating it. You just need to make a better selection and portion decisions. Avoiding any form of processed meat such as bacon, deli meats, sausages, ham, and hot dogs is a great way of choosing the right red meat to consume.

Properly cooked and unprocessed red meat is very healthy, as long as you’re choosing grass-fed red meat employing healthy cooking methods avoiding charred pieces, there is nothing really to worry about consuming red meat.

What you need to know about

……What you need to know about

Kidney Stones

The kidneys are the organ that is responsible for removing waste from the blood before passing it back to the body while the waste is passed out from the body through urine. The kidneys are situated just behind the abdomen on either side of the spine. They are two bean shaped organs that measure around 4 inches in length. Kidney stones known as renal colic, nephrolithiasis is a kind of disease that affects the kidneys. It occurs when hard deposits made of minerals and salts form inside the kidneys. This condition has many causes, and it can affect the urinary tract, which starts from the kidneys to the bladder. The stones are formed when the urine becomes concentrated which then allows minerals to stick together after they’ve been crystallised. Kidney stones can affect one or both kidneys and are most prominent among people between the ages of 30 to 60.

While small kidney stones may go unnoticed and be passed out through urine without pain, however, a more severe condition may block the ureter and the urethra. This blockage may cause a stern pain in the groin or abdomen and may even develop into a urinary tract infection. The other main symptoms of the disease include experiencing blood in your urine (haematuria) which is caused by scratching of the kidney or ureter by the stones, constant urinating, feeling restless and inability to lie down still. Other notable symptoms include persistent back pain in the lower back region that is sometimes felt in the groin while the scrotum and testicles of men may hurt.

The presence of certain substances in urine, taking some medication and not taking enough water are some of the primary causes of kidney stones. The waste removed from the blood by the kidney can sometimes form crystals that collate inside the kidneys, with time, these crystals may develop to form a stone-like substance. When these elements are formed, the human system will try to pass it out through the urinary system, which is the kidneys, the kidney tubes as well as the bladder. People who consume low-fibre diets, diets rich in protein are more likely to experience reoccurring kidney stones. Individuals with a kidney stone history in their family, had only one functional kidney, treating conditions that are affecting the small intestine have a higher chance of developing kidney stones.

The smaller kidney stones can be passed out in urine, and with proper medication, its symptoms can be treated at home. However, the bigger and larger stones may require being broken into pieces with the aid of laser energy or ultrasound, they can also be removed directly through keyhole surgery. It is quite important to avoid having kidney stones in the first instance because it’s a kind of condition that resurfaces within five years of treating it. To avoid developing kidney stones, develop a habit of consuming plenty of water daily to avoid being dehydrated. It is also imperative to keep your urine clear in other to prevent the formation of kidney stones by waste products from the blood.

Delicious Ways to Reduce Cholesterol without Drugs

Delicious Ways to Reduce Cholesterol without Drugs

Cholesterol is a combination of alcohol and steroid also known as atherosclerotic plaque. It is a wax-like substance that is in the cell membranes of body tissues carried in the blood plasma. The human system needs cholesterol in order to make and sustain cell membranes. The body also needs cholesterol because it enhances the metabolism of fat soluble vitamins and it assists with the production of bile. A condition known as atherosclerosis is the build-up of cholesterol in the artery walls. There are two types of cholesterol; HDL (high-density lipoproteins) and LDL (low-density lipoproteins).

The high-density lipoproteins are the good cholesterol while the low-density lipoproteins are considered as bad cholesterol. Both perform different functions in the body, while HDL is known to reduce the risk of heart attack, the low-density lipoproteins are linked to increasing the risk of heart disease. The Benefits and Side Effects of Creatine

The Benefits and Side Effects of Creatine

Creatine is a body chemical that is found mostly in the muscles and the brain. The primary use of the chemical is in enhancing exercise performance and improving the mass of the muscle. Creatine is most commonly found in red meat as well as seafood, and they can also be made in the laboratory. The use of creatine has also been traced to enhancing of athletic performance of individuals during a short but high intensive activity such as sprinting. Due to its ability to aid performance, the chemical is often used in producing most nutritional supplements. Though creatine enhances athletic performance in people, it has other uses in the human body. The chemical is consumed by mouth for syndromes of its deficiency that may affect congestive heart failure (CHF), fibromyalgia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Huntington’s disease, depression, the brain, diabetes.

Creatine is also involved in the manufacture of the energy that our body muscles require to work. Individuals that have low creatine level in their system such as vegetarians seem to benefit more from this chemical when they start taking creatine supplements than persons with a higher level of creatine. This scenario happens because the human skeletal muscles have a limit of the amount of creatine that it can hold, adding more to this level does nothing to the level. This level of required creatine in the skeletal muscles can be achieved within few days of consuming the prescribed dose.

Side Effect of consuming Creatine

Every health supplements or drugs has its side effect when not taken appropriately and so it is with consuming creatine wrongly. When this chemical is absorbed by mouth for up to five years, it is safe in so doing, but anything other than that will be harmful to the human body system. When creatine is taken by mouth more than what is prescribed, it could lead to harm of vital body organs such as the kidney, heart and may also impair the functioning of the heart. The high dosage of creatine can also cause cramping of the muscle, nausea, stomach pain and diarrhoea. Some studies have shown that creatine does not build muscles but may lead to weight gain in people that consumes it because it takes water from every other part of the body. Due to the fact that the chemical absorbs water from all areas of the body, it is advised to consume more water when taking creatine supplements because it might lead to dehydration.

Though most of the side effects of creatine lack sufficient scientific backing, it is however advised to stay on the safe side if you are in doubt. Breastfeeding and pregnant women are to remain clear of usage, though there is no precise information if the chemical is safe or not for them. It is also safe for children to consume about five grams of creatine by mouth daily for not more than six months. Staying safe is the paramount thing, so if you have any doubt of consuming creatine, it is better to stay clear of it.
