Surprising Foods That May Raise Your Cholesterol Levels
As we age, the food we consume becomes more important to us than ever before. At a younger age, we certainly don’t think about the harm consuming particular food can cause, however, this start to fade away as we get older. The reason is that most conditions that humans suffer as they age are as a result of what they consume, which is why it is paramount to monitor the things we eat because some of these foods may aggravate certain health conditions that are present in the human as well as bring in new ones.
One of such conditions that require watching the things we consume is high cholesterol and heart disease. These conditions are a serious concern to a lot of people around the world and as such proper care should be taken to avoid the occurrence or to maintain the already existing condition. Many foods that we take tends to raise the blood cholesterol levels, and to be on a better side; such things should be avoided. It becomes even more troublesome when some of the foods we usually believe are good for our health is now culpable of raising our cholesterol levels.
We already know that consuming some specific food such as high-fat meat and butter raises cholesterol levels, but what we don’t know is that there are other foods that we think are okay for consumption that increases our cholesterol levels. Some of these foods will be discussed briefly below.
Whole-Fat Diary Foods
There is no doubt that dairy foods are rich in nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, proteins, and calcium; however, it becomes an issue if you go for a full-fat choice. You will be getting a dose of saturated fat when you opt for whole fat dairy food which is a red flag if you don’t want your cholesterol level to rise.
Liver can be a healthy food for a lot of individuals because it is a type of food that is high in iron. However, liver can be a source of increasing the cholesterol levels of others because it is the body’s principal source of cholesterol. Cholesterol is stored in the liver hence it is capable of increasing the cholesterol levels when consumed by some individuals.
It is said that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, not when the apple is conventionally grown. Apples that are grown conventionally contains high amount of pesticides that can cause metabolic syndromes as well as obesity. Also, most applesauce makers often rip off the fibre-rich back of apples and add sweeteners which makes it a processed food; such foods are incredibly high in sugar which reduces its fibre content making it a culprit to increase cholesterol levels.
Nuts are often known to be a good food that can be taken instead of snacks; however, not all nuts are good. It is paramount to know that all nuts are created differently and there saturated fat levels are also different. It is essential to choose the nut you consume because you may be increasing your cholesterol level when you consume nuts such as Brazil nuts which are very high in saturated fats.
