Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is a condition that is characterised by the increase in body temperature that is mostly accompanied by dehydration as a result on staying in a hot environment. This condition can be dangerous if proper attention is not given to the patient. Heat stroke requires proper and prompt treatment by a medical professional to avoid more severe situation.

Some of the common symptoms and signs of heat stroke include; coma, disorientation, agitation, absence of sweating and confusion among others. Heat stroke is often experienced by people that are exposed to high temperatures, and it can affect individuals of all age even infants. Diagnosing heat stroke can be done by observing the signs and symptoms especially in individuals that are often exposed to high temperatures. It is imperative to take proper measures to prevent the occurrence of heat stroke especially in infants by ensure you remain hydrated and stay away from intensive exercises during humid and hot weather. If peradventure you or someone close to you experiences heat stroke, don’t hesitate to call emergency services.

The human body is designed in such a way that it generates heat due to metabolism and releases heat through the skin by radiation of evaporation of sweat. Moreover, when the body is exposed to extreme temperature or intense physical exercise under the sun, the amount of heat inside the body may become too much for it dissipate heat sufficiently, this circumstance will then increase the temperature of the body and results in heat stroke. Dehydration has been said to cause heat stroke as well, because when a human system is dehydrated, the individual will find it difficult to sweat fast enough to release heat and this in turn will affect the body temperature by causing to increase hence leading to heat stroke.

Heat stroke can be broadly classified into two types; non-exertional and exertional heat strokes. Non-exertional heart stroke occurs as a result of extreme weather conditions and it often affects people that are chronically ill, infants and elderly people. While the exertional heat stroke is the type of condition that occurs as a result of overexertion under the sun, meanly athletics suffers from this type of heat stroke. Mothers and child care givers should avoid leaving infants in cars parked directly under the sun because this is how most infants experience heat stroke.

If prompt and proper response is not offered to an individual experiencing heat stroke, it may lead to severe organ damage. The first thing to do in such a condition is to try and cool the victim. The following steps should be taken to help the victim regain normal temperature; if the individual can drink liquids, give them cool beverages or water, place ice block under the groin and armpits. Ensure you take the victim to a cool place and take away their clothing, you can also spray them cool water then observe their temperature until it gets to the normal body temperature (38.3 to 38.8 C or 101 to 103 F).

Types of Hearing Loss

Types of Hearing Loss

The ear is one of the sense organs in the human body. When it’s faulty or not functioning the way it should, then it calls for attention to prevent further damages. Hearing loss is one of the medical conditions that affect the ear. Hearing loss can be classified into three types; sensorineural, conducive and mixed hearing loss. The three types of hearing loss will be discussed briefly in this article; the possible causes as well as the symptoms will be discussed.

According to medical reports, the sensorineural hearing loss is the most common type. This is a permanent type of hearing loss that is characterized by the damage of the auditory nerve or the cells of the inner ear. People with this type of hearing loss have difficulty hearing because the faulty auditory nerve or inner ear weakens or prevent the transfer of sound signals to the brain which is aided by nerve signals sent to the brain.

The probable causes of sensorineural hearing loss can include the direct transfer of infection from mother to child when pregnant or a genetic syndrome for cases that started from birth, some of the infections include herpes, toxoplasmosis or rubella. While for conditions that starts later in life can as a result of the following causes; traumatic injuries, diseases that affects the blood vessels, cancerous growth in the inner ear, auto-immune diseases, exposure to too much loud noise that last for extended time, presbycusis(age deterioration), meniere disease and several others.

People treating sensorineural hearing loss can actually hear when people are talking, however, they have difficulty hearing them clearly, which happens to be one of the symptoms of the ear problem. Other symptoms of the condition include consistent buzzing or ringing on the ear, difficulty listening in a noisy surrounding, inability to hear certain speech sounds, feeling dizzy or off-balance, noises may sound too quiet or too loud and mumbled and slurred speeches of others especially children and women, these are some of the common signs of a sensorineural hearing loss.

The treatment options of sensorineural hearing loss may be the use of assistive hearing aids, or cochlear implants since a damaged auditory nerve or cells of the inner ear cannot be repaired by any surgical or medical procedure. The hearing aid to be used depends on the severity of the condition.

This type of hearing loss can be permanent or temporary depending on the cause. Conductive hearing loss occurs when there is damage to the middle or outer ear that prevents the passage of sound to the inner ear. It can also occur when there is an obstruction that prevents the inner ear from getting sound. Since conductive hearing loss affect the combination of the outer and middle ear, the cause are separated by the part of the ear it affects.

The causes of conductive hearing loss if it’s the outer ear include; wax impaction, obstructions caused by the insertion of foreign bodies into the ear, blockages caused by a bone-like protrusions that developed inside the ear canal(Exostoses), stenosis (the narrowing of the ear canal) and otitis externa.

The causes when it affects the middle ear include; otosclerosis, obstruction or blockage of the Eustachian tube, a breach in the tympanic membrane which can be caused by ear infections, rapid changes in air pressure and injury. Others include discontinuity between the bones of the middle ear which can be as a result of heavy trauma or injury, the build-up of fluid in the middle ear, glomus tumors or cholesteatoma and the freezing of the middle ear bones.

Individuals treating conductive hearing loss have difficulty with sound loudness, they can hear sound clearly when it is loud. Some of the signs and symptoms of this hearing issue include difficulty in phone conversation, pain in both or one ear, foul smell coming from the ear canal and feeling of pressure in one or both ears.

The treatment options of conductive hearing loss is determined by the cause, for condition caused by infections, abnormal growth, wax impaction and the presence of foreign objects, medical process like extraction of earwax and other surgical procedures can be used to correct it. While other causes of the hearing loss can be considered a permanent issue that cannot be corrected by medical or surgical procedures.

The last time of hearing loss is known as Mixed hearing loss, which is the combination of both the sensorineural and conductive hearing losses. This type of hearing loss can happen over time and can also be caused by trauma. It usually occurs when one hearing loss is compounded by the other. The symptoms of mixed hearing loss are the combination of the symptoms of both the sensorineural and conductive hearing loss.

The treatment for mixed hearing loss can be determined by the severity of the condition, if it is more conductive or sensorineural. If the bigger part of the condition is characterized by conductive loss, medical and surgical processes can be used to correct it, however, if it is the other way round, then implants and hearing aids can be used to correct it.

The benefits of Gelatin

The benefits of Gelatin

Gelatin is an essential nutrient that has tons of benefits to the human body. It is the cooked form of collagen and the ways it is useful in the body can be overwhelming. We will be looking at some of the ways gelatin benefits the body.

Helps the Skin

Gelatin improves the skin by helping it maintain its elasticity keeping the skin smooth and looking supple and plump. Gelatin is specially good for the skin as we age, this is because the body’s ability to produce collagen reduces the more we grow old. Gelatin helps in bridging this gap created by ageing by providing the body with enough collagen to keep the skin in great shape.

Assist the Immune system

Minimises the signs of aging

It has been shown by studies that the regular intake of gelatin is effective in reducing the signs of aging such as reducing wrinkles. It was also shown that when taken, gelatin gets to the dermis in the skin which fades away wrinkles and the appearance of fine lines.

It helps in balancing hormones

Hormones are responsible for transporting messages within the body. They are in charge of regulating all the function of the body. When these hormones are not functioning properly the body suffers from it, and when they are functioning the way they should, the effect will also be shown. It preserves the joints

The cartilage that protects the ends of the bones in the human body is formed from collagen, and it help in preventing the rubbing together of bone hence eliminating inflammation and pains. The effectiveness of the cartilage begins to reduce as we grow in age, this action causes pain, reduction in mobility of joints and ultimately severe joint inflammation conditions which may include osteoarthritis.

Gelatin when consumed in a hydrolysed form helps in the rebuilding of the cartilage which in turn will keep the cartilage in full function eliminating all sort of pains and conditions that lack of sufficient cartilage quality may cause. It is clear to see that consuming gelatin will help to prevent the occurrence of joint degradation or any other joint conditions that may arise as people age.

Helps in enhancing digestive health

Gelatin contain amino acid glycine in abundance, thus nutrient helps in protecting and strengthening the mucous membrane layer of the stomach, by so doing it assist in the repair of the gut lining. With all these, the digestive system is greatly improved and this action also help in healing the severe digestive condition which is called leaky gut syndrome. Diabetic Eye Disease

Diabetic Eye Disease

Diabetes is a deadly disease that can affect most parts of the body. Due to the excess sugar in the blood which is as a result of the malfunctioning of the insulin hormone, fluid goes into the eye causing several eye problems. A diabetic individual should endeavour to take proper care of his eye because this condition can lead to severe eye deterioration such as loss of eyesight and some other cases. Diabetes affects the eye in some ways that require immediate and professional attention to avoid further degeneration of the eye.

This article is written to show some of the ways that diabetes affects the eye.

Cataracts

Part of the natural aging process of the eye is the development of cataracts; however, diabetes can hasten the occurrence of the situation. Cataracts is a condition of the eye that makes vision to be more rigid and cloudy. Blurred vision and halos or glare at night are some of the signs of cataracts, and the condition can be corrected by surgery or the implant of an artificial intraocular lens. People managing diabetes often develop cataracts faster and earlier in life, so this is one of the ways the condition affects the eye.

Glaucoma

This is another way that diabetes affects the eye. The high blood sugar causes the movement of fluid to the eye which increases the pressure on the eye because the fluid cannot be drained out the way it should. This increased pressure causes nerves and blood vessels damages which leads to vision impairment. Glaucoma can lead to blindness if not handled correctly. Neovascular glaucoma is a rare condition that people treating diabetes are more likely to develop. This eye condition arises when there is a growth of new blood vessels on the iris and obstructs the flow of fluid from the eye. This action increases the internal pressure of the eye.

Blurry Vision

When the sugar level in the blood is too much, it causes a blurred vision, and since excess sugar causes diabetes in the blood, blurry vision is one of the signs of diabetes. Though, not all blurred vision is caused by diabetes, but it is one of the ways the medical condition affects the eye. When the blood has too much of sugar, it can make the lens to swell which hinders the ability of the eye to function correctly. If you experience blurred vision, consult your doctor and balance your blood sugar level. Though restoring your normal vision may take several months, but if you are determined, you will regain your sight.

Diabetic Retinopathy

There are many ways diabetes affects the eye, but the most common effect is diabetic retinopathy. This condition should be taken with all seriousness because it might lead to total loss of eyesight. Diabetes retinopathy is a situation that is caused when there is a blockage in the small blood vessels present in the retina due to the excess sugar in the blood. This can also happen when the blood vessels grow abnormally or leaks. The retina is responsible for the conversion of lights into signals sent through the optic nerve to the brain which is processed and shown as the images we see. When this part of the eye is affected, then it will change the way objects appear to us. Diabetic retinopathy is of three types, proliferative, maculopathy, and background diabetic retinopathy.

Warning Signs of Diabetes

Warning Signs of Diabetes

Diabetes is a silent killer, not because it is the most deadly disease on earth, because if care is not taken correctly, its signs and symptoms can be missed. Most people that have treated or are treating diabetes are not aware they have it. Diabetes is a medical condition that hampers the proper functioning of insulin, and it restricts the transport of sugar from the blood to the cells where they are converted to energy. Instead of storing sugar in the cells, diabetes stops the functioning of insulin which is responsible for the transfer of sugar from the blood to the cells which causes the accumulation of sugar in the blood.

Diabetes is fast becoming the leading cause of death in the world, and since its signs are easily missed, it is pertinent to know the symptoms not to ignore so as to be ready to battle it head-on. Below we will be looking at some of those signs that people should not ignore.

Experiencing leg pain when you walk

This symptom of diabetes is often related to adult though not exclusively. It is a condition known as PAD (Peripheral Arterial Disease). The situation occurs when the blood vessels in the legs and feet are clogged or narrowed which pinches the flow of blood. Its symptom can also happen as a cold or tingling feeling in the leg, and it may also make your feet to feel numb. Though this might not be a severe condition, but it may increase the risk of stroke and heart attack in individuals treating diabetes. You need to tell your doctor if you are experiencing such feeling in your leg and feet.

Frequent thirst

When the human system is in need of water, the sign it gives is thirst, though drinking water should alleviate this feeling. It becomes a thing of importance when the thirst is persistent and when drinking water seems not to be sufficient to quench your thirst. When you consume much water, you face another symptom of diabetes which is frequent urination, and this is as a result of the kidney performing more work due to the presence of excess sugar in the body. And when the kidney is working hard, it requires more water which results in the constant feeling of thirst.

Unexplainable loss of weight

When insulin hormone is not performing its duty well, it leaves much sugar in the blood which can cause unexplainable loss of weight. Though obesity is a warning sign of diabetes, it is also known that people treating diabetes experiences a sudden loss of weight. The reason behind the weight loss experienced by people managing diabetes is that since insulin hormone is not functioning at its optimal efficiency, the body will break down protein from the muscles for fuel in response to the absence of glucose in the cells because it will think that it is starving.

Blurred Vision (Diabetic Retinopathy)

The presence of more sugar in the blood causes the flow of fluid to the lens of the eye which causes blurred vision. You will experience changes in your vision if your blood sugar level is high, if you experience less sharp vision, you need to check your level of blood sugar. Though blurry vision can be caused by other medical conditions which can include macular degeneration or glaucoma, but if the problem persists even after balancing your blood sugar level, consult your doctor, it might be a warning symptom of diabetic retinopathy.
