Benefits of Meditation for the Mouth

Benefits of Meditation for the Mouth

There are literally millions of articles on the benefits of meditation, 28,500,000 to be exact. But of those, only 650,000 even mention how meditation can keep your mouth healthy. Oral hygiene is key for maintaining the overall health of your body. Because the mouth is the way through which food is introduced to the body, it makes sense that it is one of the most vulnerable areas to infection.

The mouth is connected to the nose, the throat, and the ears. So, for starters, an infection or other affliction within the mouth can spread easily to these other areas. From here, any bacteria or virus can spread to the lungs, eyes, and stomach. A moderately healthy body will fight these off before they get worse, but in an unhealthy body these may spread throughout the rest of the body causing a variety of symptoms.

Back in the late 1970’s to 1980’s research was first conducted to determine the link between the composition of saliva and stress levels. The study compared the saliva of a group under various conditions of stress to the saliva of that same group after meditating. The bacteria count in their mouths was lower after meditating.

There are three general determinants of tooth health: saliva production and a balanced saliva pH, a reduction of the bacteria found in the saliva, and an increased amount of salivary minerals. These determinants all showed general improvement in the group after meditating. This means that stress will increase your risk of developing oral conditions which are caused by bacteria and stress reduction techniques, such as meditation, will help make your mouth healthier.

Meditation is a different type of relaxation than sitting on the couch watching TV, it is willful relaxation. Every cell in the body is allowed to relax and to regroup. Even 10-15 minutes a few times per week can make a huge difference in the way your body feels. If you work with the chakras during meditation, it can further restore the health of your mouth by restoring the chakra which governs it.

Meditation has been used as a treatment for certain eating and digestive disorders. Acid reflux is not only uncomfortable, it can do serious damage to the esophagus. At night, when a person with an acid reflux like disorder sleeps on their back, the acid can make its way to the throat and mouth which will further damage teeth. With eating disorders, the gums and teeth are frequently weakened. Meditation, therefore, aids oral health in multiple ways. Using meditation, in conjunction with medication, can dramatically reduce the symptoms of acid reflux and improve the quality of sleep achieved.

When your mouth is healthy, the rest of your body can be healthy too. It is important to always remember that nothing in the body exists on its own. Every one of our body parts functions with other parts. People with previously great oral health are often surprised to find that a cavity has spontaneously occurred and it could be due to stress. Meditating for 45 minutes a week is enough to make a difference in how your mouth feels and functions.

Natural Ways to Decrease Tooth Sensitivity

Natural Ways to Decrease Tooth Sensitivity

Every year toothaches affect millions of Americans. An increased sensitivity to hot and cold foods and beverages or to pressure can make everyday activities painful for anyone. The best remedy is proper dental care. A root canal, crown, or filling can permanently fix a situation where pain occurs in the mouth.

As a general rule, there are three things that cause sensitivity: Tooth decay, receding gums, and worn enamel. Natural remedies can be used as a temporary fix to pain caused by sensitivity. Some herbs can even decrease the chance of developing a sensitivity in the first place. They can be brewed into a tea, made into a salve, or put on a compress.

The first step is to look at your brushing method. Brushing too hard or too briskly can do long-term damage to your enamel (that protective white coating we all see). If you are not brushing for a full two minutes, there is a good chance that all the plaque bacteria is not being removed from your mouth. It is tough to change habits, as a general rule, but if you can it will pay off.

If you have teeth which are already sensitivity, be sure to use a soft-bristled brush. This is especially true if you have gingivitis, which can leave the area below the gumline exposed. Hard bristles do more damage to exposed areas and can quicken the development of damage to the teeth.

There are many herbs which provide relief from tooth sensitivity. Aloe vera, known by some to be a miracle plant, can reduce the inflammation of the gum line. Use it several times per day and apply it directly. Sesame oil and chamomile fight bacteria and receding gums. Just dilute it in water first. Yarrow is a great antiseptic and stops gum recession. When drunk on a regular basis sage and thyme teas freshen breath and decrease the sensitivity. Also, using ½ cup of coconut oil, mixed as a smoothie or melted into tea, will help the teeth remove teeth sensitivity.

Removing acidic foods and beverages from your diet will minimize the amount of enamel lost to erosion. In some cases, it can prolong the life of your teeth. If you do eat or drink acidic beverages, brush your teeth within 20 minutes after consuming them. Be sure to use the techniques described above.

Your toothpaste may not be helping the situation either. If you are using one which is designed to fight tartar or whiten, instead of one which is designed for sensitivity, then you are not getting many of the beneficial compounds. Most of the time, they will help alleviate pain before it starts.

Enamel loss is irreversible. It is best to prevent it, but if the process has already started, proper care can keep it from getting worse. You only get one set of teeth, treat them right and they can last a very long time. If you don’t take care of them, there are few options to restore teeth to their original quality.

MDMA and PTSD what is this??

MDMA, more commonly known by its street name, ecstasy has been known as a dangerous drug for decades’ now but, more doctors are looking to its original therapeutic use. In the 1970’s when the drug was first synthesized it was meant to help with mental disorders. Now its use is being rediscovered to treat those with PTSD.

As you are most likely aware, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects a large percentage of those who have served in the military. It does not only affect those who have served though. In fact, almost 8% of the entire population will experience PTSD, most of these will be women. In the 18-54 age group, in any given year approximately 5.2 million will experience PTSD. Some instances will be relatively mild while others instances will be severe, even enough to keep the sufferer from leaving their home.

The FDA has recently approved clinical studies for the use of MDMA to treat this condition. For now, the testing is only being done in four areas of the country, but if the testing proved marketing it could get a wider test area.

The research is in the early stages of the phase 2 testing, but there are promising results already. Currently, eighty-three percent of participants have been cured of their PTSD. When you compare this to the 25% of those cured by using talk therapy, MDMA starts to look like a real treatment option. It is worth noting though that many phase 2 trials fail as they get closer to the next phase.

The studies are promising but this does not mean that those who take MDMA recreationally will have the same results. When the drug is given in a clinical setting the quality, quantity, and distribution method can be carefully monitored. None of these are guarantees for MDMA purchased outside of the medical setting. Do not go out and eat a bunch of Ecstasy to cure your PTSD.

Basically, MDMA works by releasing oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine in large quantities. This makes a patient calmer and better able to trust their therapist. This trust allows patients to access their trauma and process it without feeling the emotions and anxiety tied to it.

It is mostly because of the club scene that Ecstasy has its lurid reputation. But when added to a proper setting this drug has already helped many patients. One of the women who participated in the initial trials reported that after 15 years of traditional therapy she was still suicidal. She was initially skeptical, but after 180 days of therapy with a new doctor, she tried the medicine.

After the MDMA therapy, she reports that she is no longer suicidal. Using MDMA made her able to confront her past, even some memories she had forgotten about. She no longer lives in fear of the things that happened in her past.

Anyone who has or knows someone with PTSD knows the suffering. The sleepless nights, the flashbacks, the nightmares, the mood swings, all of these may soon be a thing of the past for PTSD sufferers. This is a treatment that can potentially save lives and change lives.

How Fruit Helps Your Pregnancy

How Fruit Helps Your Pregnancy

Every mother wants what is best for her children, not just during pregnancy, but long into adulthood as well. There are countless books which discuss everything from pre-natal vitamins to educational toys, but from the moment of conception, women have a choice in the health of their baby and new research is confirming what we already knew… fruit is amazingly healthy for women.

The study, from the University of Alberta, suggest that when pregnant women eat large quantities of fruit during pregnancy, their children will get better test scores in the future. When women ate six to seven servings of fruit per day, their children performed better during developmental testing by the time they were one year of age than their counterparts did.

Over 3,500 Canadian infants and their families were involved in this study. Between the years, 2008 and 2011 over 800 pregnant women were recruited for the study. Their children’s progress was tracked when they were one, two, three, and five respectively.

Those who conducted the study were looking specifically at the cognitive development and the factors which influence it. They realized that the amount of fruit a mother eats while she is pregnant is one of the influential of all factors.

When the team from the University of Alberta combined efforts with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry’s Division of Pediatric Neurology the research became more thorough. The Division of Pediatric Neurology had been studying the genetics of fruit flies and human beings, particularly focusing on cognition.

Though fruit flies and human beings are two very different species, they share roughly 85% of the genetics in the brain. This makes them useful to study when predicting how the human brain will react. The two groups hope that by combining their research, new insights into the human mind will be uncovered.

We know that with genetic engineering and alteration it would someday be possible to raise a child’s IQ. However, discovering a natural method not only enables mothers to have a hand in their child’s intelligence after conception but, also provides us with insight into how and why our minds work the way they do.

Many modern mothers are sacrificing nutrition and really depriving their baby of all of those nutrients necessary to start off their life healthy. It should not matter how busy you are as a mother-to-be, nutrition is vital. Unfortunately, we lack an emphasis on a proper diet in this country, particularly when it comes to pregnant women.

Many females are not taught the keys to a healthy pregnancy until after they are pregnant. Yes, we want women to be healthy then too, but if it was part of standard curriculum, women could take the right steps before they discover that they are pregnant.

I do also want to mention that being pregnant is a reason to go to the dentist more frequently. Your body is giving everything to the baby and it is often your dental health that will suffer. So, eat lots of fruit and make those dental appointments. Then when your child gets his or her first teeth, make an appointment with a good Pediatric dentist. Your baby and your body will thank you.
