A lot of controversies surround catharsis as a therapeutic healing solution. In time past,
catharsis has been used for diseases of the soul, like in the case of Plato where he evolved a
verbal catharsis for healing the soul while in his own, Aristotle established catharsis of passion
via tragic drama.
Catharsis has been used by medical practitioners to help their patients to release emotion. Not
only on their patients have they used cathartic techniques but also on themselves because it
helps them to enhance coping.

In a more literal meaning, catharsis is an emotional process or circumstance that emotions are showcased in its fullness. Catharsis is often associated with intense show of one’s emotion which can either be in form of out blown rage or uncontrollable crying. Due to the degree of the show of intense emotion, some individuals mistake catharsis to be dangerous. However, though it comes with fury, catharsis is more of a dramatic scenario than it is dangerous. Catharsis helps in liberating people of emotions they have been suppressing over a period, it provide us an avenue to relive ourselves from the stress of keeping emotions within also prevent the turmoil of subduing such emotions.
Life throw too many things against us, often, we try to subdue the heartbreaks and when these emotions paralyse and block us after trying to stay firm and strong in the hardest situations that life has thrown our way, a time will come that you can no longer withhold it. When you suddenly can’t hold back the emotions again and you happen to buckle under the stress of suppressing these heavy emotions, at this time, you get help in accessing the experience that cause the emotional trauma through catharsis and the techniques to help you understand the reasons why you are feeling that way.
We all have or more emotional experiences that affect the way we perceive or relate with others, this is because these experiences determines how we interact with people around us. Emotional experience is one of the basic parts that make up the human life. Though they may sometimes weigh us down, these experiences are needed because they help humans in processing other experience types which may include the most joyful ones and the most painful experiences that we’ve encountered during the course of our existence here on earth.
Contrary to what most people think or believe that catharsis makes human weak; catharsis does not make us weak but make us even more human, because it is a process of reliving the past experience which can give you a better understanding of the reason why it happened. Catharsis gives a clear view of what is causing our emotional grief and in the end liberates us from all forms of pain as a result of the scenario. Catharsis allows people to understand that the first step in accepting grieves and pains in life is by expressing deep emotions. At some point in life, catharsis is required, especially if you’ve been strong for long and kept your emotions in check; it shows you the reality in every situation and helps us to learn something from it.
